Mercedes E 63 AMG : Een zware bariton onder de kap

Ondanks dat de nieuwe Mercedes E-klasse er als een echte luxe-berline uitziet kan hij tot een echte bolide uitgebouwd worden ! AMG maakt van de auto een echt beest waarbij er heel wat onderdelen van de diabolische SL 63 AMG gebruikt worden.

Bedwelmende V8 !

Onder de motorkap vinden we uiteraard een AMG V8 terug. Uit 6300 cc weten de ingenieurs 525 pk en 630 Nm te puren. Voor de transmissie koos AMG natuurlijk voor zijn AMG Speedshift MCT met 7 gangen die voor het eerst in de SL 63 gemonteerd werd. Wat opvalt bij deze automaat is dat de koppelomvormer door een droge koppeling vervangen wordt. Hierdoor duren de overgangen in het beste geval slechts 100 milliseconden. Er staan vier modes ter beschikking: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) en “M” (Manual). Dat de prestaties van de partij zijn lijdt natuurlijk geen twijfel. Van 0 tot 100 gaan er slechts 4,5 tellen voorbij en bij 250 km/u wordt alles elektronisch gelimiteerd. Maar de sportafdeling van Mercedes ging ook op zoek naar brandstofbesparing. Zo werd de inwendige wrijving onder handen genomen en werd het motorbeheer herzien. De versnellingsbak werd met dezelfde intentie herzien wat een beter rendement als een klassieke unit oplevert. Mercedes kondigt als gemiddeld verbruik 12,6/100 km aan.

Adaptatieve ophanging

Deze E63 AMG neemt ook de adaptieve ophanging van de SL 63 over. Hierbij heb je de keuze tussen drie modes: comfort, sport en sport+. Ook bij het ESP kan er uit drie standen gekozen worden: ingeschakeld, sport of … OFF ! In het laatste geval moet je wel eg opgepassen voor onverhoedse bewegingen van de rechter voet. Het remsysteem is ruim bemeten en de stuurinrichting werd wat directer.

Verrassing op de Nurburgring ! De Opel Insigna OPC rijdt er immers proef en na de Ecoflex wordt dit de laatste versie die van het topmodel van Opel gepresenteerd wordt.

Het model zou niet voor het einde van 2009 in productie gaan en verschilt uiterlijk van het basismodel door zijn nieuwe voorbumper, de grote luchtinlaten, grote wielen en een dikke spoiler achteraan. Wat vermogen betreft mogen we op goed 300 pk rekenen die uit een nieuwe V6 met drukvoeding gepuurd worden.

Audi RS3 : De geruchten worden preciezer

Ondanks de dalende conjunctuur zijn de ultrasportieve RS-modellen van Audi nog steeds erg in trek. We herinneren ons zeker de RS3, de RS4, RS6 en recent nog de nieuwe TT-RS. Deze laatste komt exclusief met de fabuleuze 5-cilinder.

Minimum 300 pk

De ingenieurs van Ingolstadt kennende zou het ons verbazen dat deze motor enkel onder de kap van de TT blijft. Een verantwoordelijke van het merk gaf trouwens onlangs toe dat de constructeur overweegt om de motor onder kap van de Audi A3 te lepelen. Met een ultrakrachtige RS3 als gevolg. De geblazen 5-cilinder van 2,5 liter levert dan minimaal 300 pk ! De hiërarchie moet immers gerespecteerd worden en de TT RS moet met zijn 340 pk toch wat meer vermogen behouden.

Zwaargewichten !

Deze motorisatie zou er moeten voor zorgen dat de A3 weer in de top van het segment kan meespelen. Onlangs was er immers BMW die hun 135i coupé van een zescilinder van 306 pk voorzagen. Maar bij Audi is de Quattro uiteraard serie !

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Dually 4WD is Chevrolet's current one-ton dually model. As you would expect with a Chevrolet, it is a sharp looking, hard working truck, equally fit for to arrive at the ball or the barn.

There are no major changes to the looks of the 3500 since its last refresh in the 2007 model year.

There are two engines available for the 3500 Dually, a 6.0 liter 322 horsepower V8 and a 6.6 liter 365 horsepower V8 diesel. A six-speed automatic with overdrive is the only transmission for either.

There are three cab sizes for the 3500 Dually. They are the classic two-door standard cab, the two-door extended cab with a storage area behind the rear seat and the four-door crew cab. The extended cab version does have small rear doors on each side. The three trims of Work Truck, LT1 and LTZ, in ascending price order, are all available in all three cab sizes. There is no short bed, the eight-foot version being all that is offered.

Reviewers of the 3500 Dually find several things about it they like. It has better than class average width, payload capacity, horsepower and gross vehicle weight - the latter important for towing, among other things. However, the power to weight ratio is not very good and the warranty lags will behind the class average for large pickup trucks. Trucks in this class are not required to submit to government fuel efficiency testing, but fuel efficiency can't be helped by the low power to weight ratio. Don't plan on more than 10 miles per gallon.

Crash test figures, like fuel efficiency figures, are not required for this large model of trucks. However, the thing's a tank. Size, weight and view all promise a safer than average vehicle. So do the locking tailgate, antilock brakes, locking differential, basic airbags, tire pressure monitor and electronic parking aid that come as either standard or optional safety features.

One of the great new features for the 3500 Dually this year is OnStar 8.0. OnStar uses satellite technology and was initially designed as a safety feature that notified help in case of an accident. Modern OnStar does much more. It is a part of the navigation system and you can use it to make hotel reservations, unlock your car if you forget to remove your key and even check your email - hands free, no less.

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Dually 4WD starts at $30,070. Not cheap, but it's not meant to be a cheap truck. It's built big to do the big jobs.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro - Review

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is bringing back the past, but better! Enthusiasts of the traditional Camaro will immediately be drawn to the 2010, as it has several characteristics that bring back fond memories of the 1969 version of this beast. However, today's Camaro has drawn to it a completely different generation of appreciative fans since its starring role in the Transformers movie a few years ago. The 2010 model offers the technology of today, while maintaining the muscle car feel of years gone by. This year's version will be offered in five different trim options, the LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS.

The old school look of the 2010 Camaro is in response to Ford and Dodge introducing retro versions of the Thunderbird and Challenger. The new Camaro offers a good mix of modern design and classic feel inside and out. The exterior of the Camaro holds true to the old school, muscular form of the earlier Camaro, yet Chevy has updated it just a bit with sleeker lines that give it a more up to the minute look. There is an extensive list of options, depending on which trim level you select, including four different wheel sizes (18, 19, 20, and 21), fog lamps, and rear spoiler. GM has carried the retro theme to the inside of the car as well. The instrument panels are reminiscent of the older Camaro, and this design can be seen all through the interior.

Under the hood, the 2010 Camaro will provide the power and performance one would expect in a car of this nature. The Chevy Camaro also has three beefy engine choices. The first is a 300 horsepower 3.6 liter V6. The other two are both 6.2 liter V8s. One produces 400 horsepower, and the other will give you 422. Available transmissions are a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

The list of features and technological gadgets is not unlike many of the new vehicles of today. Just a few examples are USB and Bluetooth connectivity, premium Boston Acoustics sound system, ultrasonic rear parking assist, OnStar, and XM satellite radio. The 2010 Camaro will also offer a host of modern standard safety features, such as antilock brakes, six standard airbags and stability control. Optional rear park assist may be available as well; depending on the model.

With a price tag of around $22,000 for the base model, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is fairly reasonable. On the road, the Camaro's ride matches its muscular appearance. This car has more than enough power, and actually more than some might want to experience. However, this car should make quite a splash with its affordable price and classic muscle car feel because the 2010 Camaro really is the perfect blend of old and new.

The TL has been Acura's best selling model for quite some time. In recent years, however, sales have begun to dip for a number of reasons. In an effort to breathe some life into the model, they have decided on a substantial redesign for this year. The result is the 2009 Acura TL.

If you're familiar with the brand, the first thing you will notice is the drastically redesigned exterior. At first glance, the TL has what can probably be described as a futuristic appearance. The most noticeable characteristic is the "beak" that comes down under the grille. This unique feature will probably be one of those "love it" or "hate it" things. This unusual design is carried through on the rear of the car as well. Overall, the car is actually larger than previous models. It's also larger than its two top rivals, the Infiniti G and the Lexus ES. The TL comes standard with 17" wheels, and 18" and 19" are available as options. The interior of the Acura TL also receives an upgrade this year. The styling and technology options give the car a more upscale feel than previous versions. Standard features include 8 disc CD changer, USB and iPod connectivity. If that's not enough, you can upgrade to the Technology Package, which includes the voice activated navigation system and premium sound.

Under the hood, you have the choice of two different power plants, both of which are paired with a five speed automatic transmission. The first is a 280 HP 3.5L V6 and the other is a 308 HP 3.7L V6. Gas mileage is reasonable at 18/26 in the base model, and 17/24 in the all wheel drive version. On the road, drivers can expect the same quality and performance they have come to expect in the Acura TL. The safety features in the 2009 TL are comparable to those in the Jaguar XJ-Series and most other new cars.

If you're tired of the cookie cutter style of auto design these days, you may find the 2009 Acura TL to be quite refreshing. The redesigned exterior provides a very unique look as it goes down the road. Coming in at around $35,000 for the base model, the TL continues to be one of the most impressive sport sedans on the road today. Love it or hate it, the TL will definitely get your attention.

2008 Porsche Boxster - Review

When many folks hear about a Porsche Boxster they immediately think of speed and status. Others think of a mid-life crisis (feel free to ignore these perceptions). As a descendent of the 550 Spyder, this car is designed for those that enjoy the thrill of driving. The 2008 Porsche Boxster is no exception and comes complete with slight modifications that only increase the pleasure of owning and driving this vehicle.

This two door and two seater convertible combines luxury and style to compete against the best of them: BMW Z4, Mercedes Benz SLK and Audi TT. The exterior has the low-slung feel of a Formula-1 car, along with alloy wheels and a power convertible top.

Interior features include the Porsche necessities such as leather upholstery, cup holders, and speed sensitive volume control (meaning as speed increases, the car responds by increasing the volume of your music, radio, etc.). The standard 2008 Boxster can quickly increase in price as you look to add other luxuries. However, you always retain the option to add the wonders of heated seats, park assist, a Bose system or choose from the other 100 optional features.

As many potential buyers of the Boxster tend toward a need for speed, this car employs some interesting safety features to keep its driver protected. One feature is called PSM, or Porsche Stability Management, and is designed to brake when the car is being over-steered or under-steered. PSM does this by calculating the speed, direction, and velocity to ensure safety in the driving. This Porsche contains front airbags, but more importantly, side airbags to protect all angles from impacts.

On to the important stuff - fuel economy! Depending on the trim you have chosen, the 2008 Boxster delivers around 20 city mpg and 29 highway mpg.
This vehicle also comes in two trims: the 2008 Porsche Boxster Convertible and the 2008 Porsche Boxster S. Respectively, the MSRP for the convertible is $45,800 and the S is $55,700. The difference in the vehicles lies within the performance specs. The convertible comes standard with a 2.7 liter H-6 engine and 245 horsepower. The S increases to a 3.4 liter H-6 engine with 295 horsepower, in turn achieving 18 city mpg and 26 highway mpg.

The 2008 Porsche Boxster is by no means a practical vehicle, but if you are looking to join the ranks of Porsche owners who were born to drive then this is a good place to start.

2007 Porsche Cayman - Review

The 2007 Porsche Cayman is available in the base model for $49,400. Powered by a 245 hp, 2.7-liter, six-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission, the vehicle can make zero to sixty in 5.8 seconds and has a top track speed of 160 mph. The S model, from $58,900, features a 295 hp, 3.4-liter, six-cylinder with a six-speed manual that does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and tops out at 171 mph.

Standard seats in the Cayman are upholstered with a leatherette finish. There's an airbag in each backrest, for upper body protection, as well as generous seat adjustment options regardless of the height of the driver. The classic Porsche instrumentation has an aluminum finish with crisp, white back-lit illumination. Digital readouts complement the usual speedometer, tachometer, and odometer functions and include such information as average fuel consumption and average speed to remaining fuel range.

The standard audio system is an AM/FM/CD unit with an option for a Bose Surround Sound System. The optional Porsche Communication management puts information and entertainment controls on the center console and integrates navigation, telephone, enhanced audio and on board computer functions in one display. The 2007 Porsche Cayman's high-resolution 5.8-inch color display is legible under all light conditions.

2009 Honda Fit - Review

The 2009 Honda Fit hatchback will roll out this year with a few new tricks up its sleeve. This newly designed model will replace the current style that has been sold in the United States since 2006. The 2009 Fit is a subcompact car that competes with the likes of the Chevy Aveo, Hyundai Elantra, Scion xD, and the Toyota Yaris. The new Fit will be priced between $14,000 and $15,000, with gas mileage expected to be between 28-34 miles per gallon. This will differ between the base model and the Fit Sport edition.

Among the changes for the 2009 Fit is the exterior design. Basically, it will be slightly larger than the previous version, with a longer sloping nose. It maintains the somewhat odd look that has made it stand out among the crowd. It appears to be taller than some of its competitors. This look is not only unique, but it also serves a purpose. The extended head room makes it quite easy to get in and out of for a car this small. Also new this year is the standard 15" steel wheels. This is a change from the 14" wheels of the previous models. The 2009 Fit Sport will offer 16" aluminum wheels.

Under the hood, you'll find a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder that is comparable to that of the previous versions. It will again be paired with five speed automatic or manual transmission. Like its competitors, the Fit will be front wheel drive. The Honda Fit was already known for its impressive ride quality, and the new version will be even better. Honda has taken steps to improve the steering and suspension to that end.

Inside this 2009 Honda, you'll notice increased leg room and cargo space. Not much has changed this year with the already impressive quality of interior materials. This year's version does, however, offer a few new options. Most notably are the touch screen navigation system and the USB ports for portable devices. Another nice feature inside this car is the 60/40 split folding back seats. This allows for a variety of configurations for passengers and cargo.

The unique look of this vehicle also lends itself to the safety of its occupants. The engineers have attempted to align certain areas of the 2009 Fit to the crumple zones of some larger vehicles. Other safety features are comparable to other vehicles in this class, with the exception of the electronic stability system. This type of technology is rarely found in a vehicle of this size.

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD - Review

The first word that comes to mind when thinking about the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD is "choices". Some would say too many choices; however, others love the variety and versatility. There are many different configurations and trim levels available on the Sierra; especially when dealing with the engine and suspension. There are no less than eight engines and five suspensions available. The engines range from a 195HP V6 to a 403HP V8. Available transmissions are either four or six speed, depending on the engine. Obviously, fuel mileage will vary greatly as well. You can expect anywhere from 15 mpg in the city to 20 mpg on the highway.

You can also choose from a variety of cab and bed configurations within the four available trim levels. Regular, extended, and crew cabs are available, as well as bed lengths of 5'9", 6'6", and 8'. The 2009 Sierra is the sister truck to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The GMC, however, is offered as a slightly more upscale version of the truck. Its styling is sleeker, and the interior is more comfortable and inviting. They also try to separate the two trucks by changing the design of the bumpers, beds, hood, and grille. The edges of the Sierra are a bit smoother than and not quite as sharp as those of the Silverado.

The interior is quite different as well, with a stylish upscale version, as well as a work, utility version. The Work Truck has simple, easy to access controls that can be operated while wearing gloves, while the upper trim versions focus more on comfort and luxury. The Sierra also continues to be one of the top performing trucks in the areas of safety and crash testing. The upper end trim levels are also receiving more technological upgrades this year, with OnStar upgrades and more connectivity for all of your high tech gadgets.

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD has a starting price of around $19,000 for the base model. There are enough choices and configurations in this truck to accommodate almost any type of application, from work to a night on the town. If you are not a very decisive person, you may want to look elsewhere, but if you enjoy being offered plenty of options, you should give this truck a look. Even though it is related to the Silverado, it definitely stands on its own two feet.

Still fresh from its complete 2007 redesign, the 2009 MINI Cooper is making drivers and those it passes smile broadly. It's a fun, sporty, one-of-a-kind subcompact car that utilizes a BMW engine. The news this year stems from the newly available turbocharged Cooper S which cranks out 177 lb-ft of torque from 1600 to 5000 rpm. This makes the Cooper S perform considerable better than its supercharged predecessor. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Getrag transmission.

The aforementioned 2007 redesign marked the beginning of the second generation for the MINI Cooper. While it appears quite similar to the 1st generation, there are still marked differences upon closer inspection. It's a practical vehicle that is ever so fun to command. Its seating is surprisingly comfortable and it actually has quite a lot of useful cargo space as well. It is EPA-rated for fuel economy at 28/37 mpg city/highway - an impressive asset for any car in today's economy.

Inside, it is able to comfortably capacitate four full-grown adults. Even the rear seats have ample room for comfortable journeys. BMW has it well-planned where you are able to dictate several factors for personalization of the interior. You can choose between an impressive array of options for accent panels, trim panels, ambient lighting, electronics, striping kits and upholstery materials/colors.

As in 2008, the 2009 Cooper is available as a 2-door hatchback (called the hardtop), a convertible and the MINI John Cooper Work. There's also a MINI Cooper with an extended wheelbase known as the Clubman. Of course, the trim levels haven't changed. The Cooper and the higher-performing Cooper S are still the only ones available.

The MINI company has always been about minimalism. The original MINI Cooper concept dates back to the early 1950s. Today, with a global oil crisis in full swing and a planetary desire for conservation, the MINI fits in better than ever. The newest designs for the MINI Cooper are sleek - racy looking.

Pricing for the base 2009 Cooper starts at $19,200 and the John Cooper Clubman starts at $31,450 and climbs with optional packages and features added. The basic warranty for all MINI Coopers stays in effect for 4 years or 50,000 miles. The MINI also earned a respectable 4-star safety rating from the NHTSA for frontal crash tests.

Standard safety features include the bulldog-wide MINI stance, 6 airbags with an Air Curtain System, ABS braking, EBD and CBC. The Jaguar XK replaced the XJS, but is really descended from the much-loved E-Series. The 2009 Jaguar XK-Series does not disappoint. Jags grand touring machine gets virtually nothing but rave reviews from the people who drive it. Competition for the XK-Series includes Aston Martin V8 Vantage, BMW 6-Series, Infiniti G37 and Maserati GranTurismo.

The XK-Series is rear-wheel drive and sports a 300 horsepower 4.2 liter V8 engine, the first V8 ever in a Jag. The engine is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually for those in the mood. Its 16 miles per gallon city and 25 miles per gallon highway is among the best in its class, in spite of needing an electronically controlled top speed. XK comes in four varieties - XK and XKR in both coupe and convertible. The biggest difference is that the supercharged XKR is even faster than the XK.

The XKR also has a number of performance refinements, an aluminum mesh grille and quad exhaust outlets. Standard features on the XK-Series include adaptive suspension damping, rear parking sensors, touchscreen navigation, leather seats, power heated front seats with driver memory, Bluetooth, six-CD/MP3 in-dash changer with six speakers. As good as all that sounds, it can get better. Optional equipment on the XK-Series includes several different wheel designs, adaptive cruise control, better quality leather and a premium Alpine surround-sound system including satellite radio. An Enhanced Luxury Package offers sixteen-way power seats, a heated leather steering wheel, leather-trimmed instrument and door inserts and power folding mirrors. The XKR version of that package offers up twenty-inch wheel and either a specialized aluminum or a walnut interior trim. If you can't have fun driving with all that, I can't help you. NHTSA crash test numbers are not available for the Jaguar XK-Series. Safety features on the Jag include four-wheel antilock brakes, depowered airbag, side airbags, traction control and stability control. It comes with a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty including roadside assistance and has free maintenance for 1 year/10,000 miles. The Jag is traditionally a car for the well to do, and the XK-Series is no exception. Base price on the XK Coupe is $74, 835. The price goes up from there with base for an XK convertible set at $80,835, the XKR Coupe at 86,035 and the XKR convertible at a stinging $92,035. That being said, if you have an extra hundred grand laying around that you didn't have anything else planned for, the 2009 Jaguar XK-Series is a great way to spend it.

The 2009 Audi A4 Avant Wagon is Audi's upscale midsize station wagon. Competitors include the BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon, Volkswagen Passat Wagon, Saab 9-3 SportCombi, Volvo V70 and Subaru Outback.
One of the sharpest looking station wagons on the road, the Avant has been refreshed for 2009. It is longer, wider and lower than the first generation. Headlights are similar to those on the A8, and LED running lights are also part of the combination. All in all, the first glance might make you think you're looking at a sports car instead of a station wagon.
The A4 Avant is propelled by a 2.0 liter, 211 horsepower I4 engine (no options) generating 258 pound feet of torque - which is excellent torque for a small station wagon. Like the engine, there is only one transmission, a six-speed automatic with overdrive. This combination generates 21 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. This is well above the average fuel efficiency of either upscale midsize cars or station wagons in general.
The A4 Avant, like all Audi vehicles, has quattro all-wheel drive. Quattro is a permanent all-wheel drive system with its genesis in the Volkswagen World War II German Army command vehicles.

In the quattro systems, torque is split between the front and rear axles. In adverse conditions the amount of torque applied to each axle can be changed instantly and unnoticeably with up to 80% of the torque going to a specific axle. The small amount of torque for the troubled axle helps maintain control of it. Unlike many modern automotive systems, this is done without computers, which actually makes it more reliable.

German engineering at its best, the A4 Avant rates five stars in every category of NHTSA crash tests. Standard safety features include antilock brakes with electronic braking assist and traction and stability controls, with a full set of airbags, anti-theft system and tire pressure monitor. An electronic parking aid is available.

The A4 Avant has only one trim, but being an Audi you can bet it's a nice one. The Avant gets good marks for its overall warranty, but the power train warranty is below average for class. The other knocks on the vehicle are that it is underpowered for a high dollar vehicle and somewhat short on headroom for a station wagon.

Base price on the 2009 Audi A4 Avant Wagon is $34,500. That's quite a bit higher than average for station wagons, but a little lower than average for upper end makes. The thing is, if you're looking for a high-end vehicle, an Audi has the safety, the features and the reputation to back up their asking price.

Hyundai may be the most impressive car line in America today, and that certainly includes their compact model, the 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra, in the United States for more than 15 years now, is the best selling model in the Hyundai line.

Competition comes from everywhere. In America it includes the Chevy Cobalt, Dodge Caliber and Ford Focus. From Japan the Honda Civic, Mazda Mazda3 and the Toyota Corolla. Europe also has a hand in this pie with such cars as the Subaru Impreza and the Volkswagen Rabbit. Many are good and some are very good, but all around it would be surprising if any of them were a better deal than the Elantra.

The Elantra body style has not changed since the 2007 model year, but there are some new things for 2009. These include USB for your iPod, a larger audio display, better satellite radio, an enhanced instrument cluster and changes in the suspension that make for better handling and ride. None of these changes are major.

The standard motor and transmission combination is a 2.0 liter, 138 horsepower I4 gasoline engine with a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive. You can substitute a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Fuel efficiency, especially in city driving, is one of Elantra's strong suits at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway with the automatic transmission. The manual transmission gets a mile less per gallon in the city.
There are two trims for Elantra, the GLS and the SE, with the SE being the nicer. That being said, there are only three things you can get on the SE that you can't get on the GLS - alloy wheels (the GLS come with steel wheels) and leather and heated seats. Everything else the SE has you can get on the GLS as an option.

The Elantra gets nothing less than 4 stars from NHTSA - for front side and rear side impact collisions and rollover. Front impact collisions are 5-star. Overall, this is somewhat on the good side of average for safety ratings. Elantra also has a number of the top safety features, including child safety locks, tire pressure monitor, trunk safety release and, of course, plenty of airbags. Other safety features are available as options, especially on the SE.

The 2009 Hyundai Elantra is light on horsepower for its class, but that's about its only knock. Aside from those things already mentioned, it is ahead of class in legroom and warranty, which is advertised by Hyundai as the best in America. And at a measly $14,120 it is also several thousand dollars below class average on price. All in all, it's hard not to like anything Hyundai puts out, and the Elantra is no exception.

2009 Chrysler 300 - Review

The 2009 Chrysler 300 comes out with three trim options to answer its competitors, which include the Ford Taurus and the Chevy Impala. The LX is the base model, followed by the Touring and Limited options. All three models are available in rear wheel drive, with only the Touring and Limited offering all wheel drive. There have not been any major changes to this year's model, with the exception of some added chrome in the interior and an active transfer case and front axle disconnect.

The 2009 300 is powered by one of two V6 engines. The first is the 178 horsepower 2.7 liter, and the other is a 250 horsepower 3.5 liter. Convertible trims are called LX, Touring and the Limited while sedan trims are labeled only Limited and Touring as the LX sedan has been discontinued for the 2009 model year. There are loads of optional safety features as well.

Since 2007, the Sebring has taken quite a bit of criticism, but you must remember which autos it stands against. In general, the 2009 Scion xD is an unconventional vehicle for the unconventional driver. Its high level of customization is only overshadowed by its inadequate engine model. The 2009 Scion xB is a four-door crossover wagon that includes a lengthy list of standard features. A carryover from the previous model year, the Scion xB is uniquely styled with a boxy, low slung exterior. Affordably priced, the xB is primarily marketed as competition for models like the Subaru Impreza, to the younger market. However, mature buyers will find that the five-passenger wagon is easily customizable to fit their specific needs.

Under the hood, the Scion xB is equipped with a 158 horsepower 2.4L I4. No other engine options are available. Nevertheless, buyers can choose from either a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive or a four-speed automatic with overdrive. With 162-lbs per foot of torque, the xB is moderately powered. Front stabilizer bars, electric rack and pinion power steering, and vehicle stability control are all included as well. With 22 city MPG and 28 highway MPG, the Scion xB has impressive fuel efficiency, but those that are expecting hybrid equivalency should look elsewhere.

Inside, a great number of standard features are included, along with numerous optional additions. Power door locks, remote keyless entry, digital clock, and rear privacy glass are all standard. Buyers can upgrade to features like a silver dash applique, illuminated door sills featuring the Scion badging, several shifter knob options, and a remote start system, among other additions. A Pioneer Premium Sound System can be added with MP3 capabilities and XM Satellite Radio. A navigation system can be included too.

Buyers can pick from a long list of exterior modifications as well. A spoiler can be added, while a carbon fiber window trim is available also. However, one of the most unique features of the Scion brand is the ability to customize a purchase with body kits and other aftermarket features directly at the dealership. Scion offers a Five Axis Body Lip Kit for the xB that includes a rear skirt, front lip, and left and ride side rockers. Several grille inserts are available as well.

Base priced at around $15,750, the 2009 Scion xB is only available in one trim. Nonetheless, with the numerous options, buyers will soon find that having everything they want will end up costing a great deal. But, the younger buyer that is looking for a car that reflects their personality and taste will find that the Scion xB is a great match. For the consumer that simply wants a no-hassles straight-from-the-factory model, he or she should steer clear of the Scion lots.

2009 Subaru Legacy - Review

The 2009 Subaru Legacy is the Subaru midsize, competing with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Equivalent American cars include the Dodge Avenger and Ford Fusion. The Legacy starts at $20,795, somewhat on the high side of the class, but not out of reason.

The base engine on the Legacy is a four cylinder 2.5 liter with 175 horsepower that gets 20 miles to the gallon city and 26 miles to the gallon highway. It comes with either a four speed automatic or a five speed manual transmission. There is also a turbocharged version that generates 243 horsepower and gets either 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway or 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, depending on whether it has the five speed manual or a five speed automatic transmission.

The new 3.0 R Limited comes with a 3 liter flat-six with 245 horsepower, which has only a five speed automatic transmission available. It gets 17 miles per gallon in town and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. All versions of the Legacy are all wheel drive.

Changes to Legacy looks are not major, but the station wagons were dropped in favor of the Outbacks. There are five trim models, in ascending order: Special Edition, Limited, GT Limited, GT Spec. B and 3.0 R Limited, the last being a new package. Of course, the higher the model, the higher the price and the more goodies that come standard.

Speaking of goodies, the Subaru has its fair share available. These include power moonroof, automatic off four-beam halogen headlights and heated power mirrors on the outside. Inside there are four-stage heated bucket seats with eight-way adjustment for the driver and four-way for the passenger. Power everything is also available, of course, including one touch driver control windows.

There is an available Harman-Kardon premium audio system with a 385 watt amplifier/equalizer, eight speakers and a subwoofer. Of course the Legacy has leather upholstery and a leather wrapped gearshift knob and steering wheel available, but it also has a leather wrapped parking brake handle, a nice touch.

The Legacy comes with excellent NHTSA safety ratings - five star everywhere except a four star rollover. Safety features available include airbags everywhere, anti-lock brakes, the LATCH system for child safety seats, inside trunk release and tire pressure monitoring system. There is also the Safety Brake Pedal System, designed to help avoid leg injury by giving way in a crash.

As you would expect from Subaru, the 2009 Subaru Legacy is a solid offering, worth the money. It deserves a look from anyone interested in a midsize car.

2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 - Review

The 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 is a midsize sport utility vehicle, first cousin to the Porsche Cayenne. Poor first cousin, as it happens, though this is not a reflection on the Touareg 2. It's also a second cousin to the Audi Q7. It must be tough having so many rich relatives and coming from a family noted for its austerity, but Touareg 2 is keeping up with the Joneses better than one might think.

As a midsize, Touareg 2 goes up against such domestics SUVs as the new Dodge Journey, GMC Envoy, Cadillac SRX and Lincoln MKX. The boys from overseas include Acura MDX, Infiniti FX, Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra and Volvo XC90.

Touareg 2 is pushed by either a 280 horsepower 3.6 liter V6 or a 350 horsepower 4.2 liter V8 mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Touareg 2 gets fourteen miles per gallon highway and twenty miles per gallon city with the V6 engine. The V8 engine drops that to thirteen city and eighteen highway.

There is also a 310 horsepower 5.0 liter V10. Towing capacity for any of the engines is almost eight thousand pounds.

It's hard to put a finger on just why, because nothing about it really stands out, but the Touareg 2 is truly a sharp looking car. Positives for the Touareg 2 are the performance of the V8 (which is no hot rod, but gets the job done), cargo room and interior workmanship and materials. Negatives include performance of the V6, which is simply underpowered for the weight of the vehicle (especially when towing), gas mileage of the V8 and the navigation system.

Touareg 2 comes in only one trim. It's a nice one, though, including standard leather, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with mounted controls; heated front seats; twelve-way power driver's seat; split, folding rear seat; heated, power mirrors with turn signals mounted on them; power everything; remote keyless entry; sunroom; CD player/radio/satellite radio; trip computer; universal garage door opener; heated windshield washer nozzles; cooled glove compartment; power rear gate; rear window defroster and automatic headlights. Optional equipment includes wooden interior trim; twelve-way power passenger seat; navigation system; backup camera; premium sound system; iPod adapter; and six-disk CD changer (trunk mounted). .

Safety on the Touareg 2 is what you would expect from Volkswagen. Five-star NHSTA ratings everywhere except rollover, where it is four-star. It doesn't come any better for an SUV. Also as you would expect from Volkswagen, all the standard safety features are available including antilock brakes, anti-skid system and airbags all around, just to name a few.

Base price for the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 is $39,300. Not bad at all for what it is. Volkswagen has been a popular brand name since the first "bug" came to America. Nothing about the Touareg 2 is likely to change that.

The 2009 Volkswagen New Beetle will roll out as the latest version of this famed automobile. Calling it "new" doesn't really fit anymore since the car has been back in production since 1998, and hasn't had any major redesigns since then. The Beetle is based on the VW golf platform, and comes in either a coupe or convertible. With so many newer vehicles crowding the small car market, the one major selling point this one has over its competition is the distinctive look.

Most people who buy the Volkswagen Beetle are usually those who value form over function. It continues to carry the classic style and appearance of its early versions. The convertible comes equipped with a power folding soft top, and the coupe has a power sunroof as an option. Both trims come standard with 16" alloy wheels, but you can upgrade to 17" as factory options. On the inside, the 2009 Beetle has full power accessories, and many of the other features so common to new vehicles today, such as heated seats and premium sound system. This is, however, the area where the Beetle falls short of its competition. As you can imagine, there is limited space inside for anything other than your passengers. Long trips in this car will not be very comfortable for back seat passengers because of the shape of the roof.

Both trims offer the same engine, which is a 2.5 liter inline 5-cylinder that produces 150 horsepower. As far as the transmission goes, the coupe is available in either a five speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the convertible only offers the automatic. There is also a rollover protection system standard on the convertible. The 2.5 liter engine packs enough power to make this car relatively fun to drive. Unfortunately, most people are looking for more in a vehicle than just a fun drive. Most need some sort of practicality as well. This is where the 2009 Volkswagen New Beetle falls short for some people, especially at a starting price of around $18,000. If you need at least some utility capabilities, you may want to explore some of the cars that the Beetle competes with, such as the Honda Civic, or Saturn Astra.

The 1976 Thunderbird.Could It Be the Best Luxury Car Buy In the World?
The private world of Thunderbird for 1976 was elevated to new heights by advertising that took the previous year's ad slogan, "Could it be the best luxury car buy in America?" and expanded it to include the entire world for 1976! It might seem a bit far fetched at first, but let's look a bit deeper at it.

The 1976 Thunderbird was introduced on October 3, 1975, and had a $7,790 base price. A total of 52,935 were built, which is pretty good considering the car was now in its fifth year of this body style, and that externally it hadn't changed much at all since 1974. 1976 sales increased 10,250 units over 1975, and the price was only increased by $89, which is very reasonable. There are a couple of reasons for this. Enough time had passed since the oil crisis of 1973 for people to forget the long lines and gas shortages. And, word was out that if you wanted a big Thunderbird, this would be your last chance to buy it.

Much of the year's automotive news was about the final Cadillac Eldorado Convertible being built. The Eldorado Convertible represented the last of an American breed: the final convertible to roll off the assembly line. For years, convertibles had been the glamour queens of most car lines; and in the days before factory air conditioning and stereo systems, there was nothing better than the exhiliration of driving with the top down and enjoying the scenery and fresh air. But once factory air conditioning and stereo radios in automobiles became popular, demand for convertibles dropped. The availability of power sunroofs, T-Tops, and the like also contributed to the decline of the convertible. Other manufacturers had stopped making convertibles years earlier. The last Thunderbird Convertible rolled off the line in 1966, and the final Imperial Convertible was built in 1968. Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Chevrolet all built their last one in 1975. Ford built its last Galaxie 500/LTD convertible in 1972, and the Mustang followed along with its last convertible in 1973. Truly, the Eldorado was the last American convertible being built, and everyone just knew they were going to be collectible.

The final 200 1976 Eldorado Convertibles built were all identical with white paint, white tops, and white leather interiors with red piping on the seats and red components. Wheel covers featured white accent paint instead of the normal black. Red and blue paint stripes decorated the exterior, and a plaque was mounted to the instrument panel announcing it was one of the last ones. Window stickers on the final 200 indicated an option of "LAST CONV RPL DECOR PACKAGE" for $85. The real last one off the assembly line was kept by Cadillac Division. Many were hardly driven before they were put up for storage. Some were offered on the market seconds after the last one Cadillac had to sell had been sold. Prices went into outer space for a time, then came back down to Earth quickly. It seems there were just too many nice ones around, and Cadillac spoiled it all by marketing another Eldorado Convertible in the early eighties. So, it was fun while it lasted, but it didn't last for long.

The Thunderbird, on the other hand, has never been as big as it was in 1976. And '76 was a good year to buy one, as they were great cars. Very few problems presented themselves to owners, as almost five years of production had eliminated most concerns, and the assembly workers had built so many of them that they could almost do it in the dark.

In a fitting tribute to the final big Bird, Ford introduced several new Luxury Groups. The Creme and Gold Luxury Group consisted of two tone paint with Gold Starfire on the body sides and Creme on the hood, roof, and deck lid. A Gold half-vinyl roof, Creme wide vinyl bodyside moldings, Gold emblem in the opera windows, unique gold tape stripes, gold instrument panel plaque, Deep Dish Wheels, and color-keyed luggage compartment dress-up trim completed the picture. Inside, luxurious Gold Media Velour upholstery, or soft Creme and Gold leather seating surfaces, with gold bolsters, instrument panel, and carpeting, and Creme inserts on the seats and side panels. Very distinctive!

Next was the Bordeaux Luxury Group, which was pretty much like the Burgundy Luxury Group from 1974. Rich looking Bordeaux Starfire paint was complimented by a matching Dark Red or Silver half-vinyl roof. Dual bodyside and hood paint stripes were in gold or silver, depending on vinyl roof color. Dark Red wide vinyl bodyside moldings protected the sides, and Simulated Wire Wheel Covers flashed in the light as the Bird flew by. Inside, Media Velour upholstery in Red, or Red leather seating surfaces pampered the lucky passengers. Red luggage compartment dress up trim reminded everyone that this was not a standard Thunderbird!

And if Creme and Gold and Bordeaux weren't your thing, the spectacular Lipstick Luxury Group might have been. Flashy is an understatement! A Lipstick Red paint finish was topped off with a Bright Red half-vinyl roof, dual white bodyside and hood stripes, Bright Red wide vinyl bodyside moldings, and Simulated Wire Wheel Covers. Inside, white trim in leather or Super-Soft vinyl, with vibrant Red components. The luggage compartment dress-up trim was in Red. Spectacular is the word!
Many features that were standard in 1975 were moved to the options list for 1976, which may have been done to keep costs low. These items included Tinted Glass, Automatic Seat Back Release, WSW Tires, Front Cornering Lamps, AM/FM Stereo Radio, and Power Rear Quarter Windows were eliminated completely, as they were now just stationary glass and didn't open at all.

New options were limited to a Kasman cloth interior trim, which was available in five colors, a driver's side lighted visor vanity mirror, power lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, a signal seeking AM/FM Stereo Search radio, and an AM/FM Stereo Radio with Quadrasonic Tape Player. The latter played pre-recorded tapes that separated the music into four separate channels, one for each speaker in the car. Speakers could be individually balanced for the best sound quality, which fine tuned the listening experience to individual preferences. This took stereo to a new level by literally adding another dimension to it. Despite its $382 cost, it was a popular option.

The 1976 Thunderbird was not the only car to be in its final year prior to a down sizing. Most of General Motors' full size cars would be much smaller for 1977, including every Cadillac model in the line up except for the Fleetwood Eldorado, which wouldn't be down sized until 1979.

After 1976, the Thunderbird would become a different car. Again. As needs evolved, so did the Thunderbird. What began as a sporty two passenger convertible for 1955, became a four passenger hardtop for 1958. A convertible was made available late in the year. Styling changed every three years or so but the Bird maintained the same character until 1967, when the convertible was dropped and a four door sedan was added to the line. Built to accommodate those who had always loved the Thunderbird's looks, but needed the convenience of four doors, the new model was a sensation in its first year. Sales fell during the following years, as it was truly a car about 4 years ahead of its time when the last one was built in 1971. Cadillac's new "international sized" Seville for 1976 would sell like crazy, and that is what the four door Thunderbird could have been, had it been given more time.

In 1972, the Bird got bigger, more luxurious, and began to shed any pretense of being sporty. And this is how it remained until 1976. When the 1977 models were introduced, a much smaller, lighter, more efficient car appeared, with a much reduced price sticker, as well. And it was once again a huge hit. More Thunderbirds were sold in 1977 than in any other model year prior. And just as many lamented the passing of the original two passenger convertible, others said the new smaller Birds weren't really Thunderbirds. But that has always been one of the Thunderbird's secrets: the ability to change with the times, and set new trends while doing it.

The Thunderbird has always been a leader, and it is the car other manufacturers wished they'd had the foresight to build first. There is only one original, and Thunderbird has always been it. Everything else is just a copy.

The Jaguar XJ has picked up the award for Best Luxury car in the 2006 Fleet World Awards for a third consecutive year. The trophy was presented at a special ceremony held at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall on Thursday 18 May.

The awards are judged by a panel of experts representing the leasing industry, fleet managers, motoring journalists, residual value guides and Fleet World’s own editorial team. The judges took several factors into account, including residual values, maintenance costs, reliability, driver appeal and manufacturer back-up.

The judging panel is chaired by industry professional, George Emmerson, who has managed fleets at IBM, NHBC and Black Horse Agencies. Managing Director of Jaguar in the UK, Geoff Cousins said: "We are honoured to win this award for the third year running, and particularly pleased that it is the diesel engine that has impressed so soon after going on sale in September last year.

Exotic supercars are extreme in every sense. But what to make of this claim: According to the Saleen S7 press release, its aerodynamic ground effects are so effective, and create so much down force (what holds a car to the road at high speeds), that even if you drove the S7 upside down at 160 mph on some sort of Hot Wheels roller-coaster track that exploded into real-life scale, the car wouldn't lose its contact with the road. Of course they didn't explain how they know this, and, sorry, we're not volunteering to test out the theory.

Meanwhile, the S7 power plant is decidedly less outlandish than its ground effects. The motor is derived from a Ford Mustang, then deeply modified. It's made entirely of aluminum, has stainless-steel valves with titanium retainers, and a high vacuum dry sump and stainless-steel exhaust. It breathes through roof-mounted intakes and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Power output is a claimed 550 horsepower, with performance of less than four seconds to 60 mph and a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

And the S7 has some fairly clever components: a video monitor instead of a rearview mirror (since how could you see anything aft via a conventional mirror, anyway?), and a removable steering wheel to ease entry and exit into the tight-fitting cabin.

But we still have to ask: With a new Lamborghini on the market, as well as a new Ferrari 575M Maranello coming, who wants a Ford-powered supercar?

Porsche GT2

Porsche GT2 $180,665 Until Porsche builds the Carrera GT (a late-2003 model with an open cockpit and a six-liter V-10 engine that will produce 558 horsepower), you'll have to make due with the GT2, for now the fastest street-legal Porsche on earth.

The GT2 is essentially a Porsche 911 Turbo with every gram of fat stripped out of it (220 pounds were deleted by cutting out items like the rear jump seats and the sunroof, and by using lighter materials like ceramic brake discs rather than metallic ones). The GT2 also gets 456 horsepower (the 911 Turbo produces 415 hp), thanks to increased turbo boost and larger intercoolers for the turbos.

Lighter and more powerful, the GT2 is now certainly faster, clocking nearly the same acceleration rate to 60 mph as the far more expensive Murciélago (0-62 mph--0-100 kilometers per hour--in about four seconds), and can achieve a top speed of 195 mph.

One thing that you can't do is assume that the GT2 will be quite as obedient as four-wheel drive 911s, because this Porsche only has rear-wheel drive, albeit with a highly optimized suspension. That means that some of that dreaded rearward rotation is bound to surface when you push this 911 to the nth degree on a racetrack, and you'd better learn where the limits are very gradually.

Of course, Porsche engineers have made sure that you'll just about be unable to unstick the GT2's tail end during a day drive on your favorite street, thanks to a fierce suspension layout.

The GT2 sits on the 911 Turbo chassis but has been lowered almost a full inch--and all springs, bearings and shocks have been made stiffer and stouter--to accept racing modifications should the driver opt for them. Front struts are adjustable for racing, and the strut support mounts also allow wheel camber adjustments to allow for use of racing tires. Similar modifications exist at the rear suspension, again for optimized racing potential.

If you get the feeling that the GT2 would be happiest on the track, you're right. Although you could certainly drive this car daily, and you'd have better visibility than in a lot of supercars, it would be rough on the molars.

Jaguar XKR 100

Jaguar XKR 100 Coupe and Convertible $98,330

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons, this year Jaguar will sell 300 XKR 100 cars in North America. True, you pay quite a premium for that limited-edition status. It costs about 17 grand more for the coupe version of the XKR 100 than for the stock hardtop XKR, but only $12,000 more for the convertible version. And although there will be fewer coupes, don't go thinking you'll somehow get that collector- car value back in your lifetime. Buy the convertible and enjoy driving it; don't buy it for mothballing.

OK, so what do you get that you don't get in the stock XKR? Well, not added engine performance. Stock XKRs get a 370 horsepower supercharged V-8 and a sport-tuned suspension with computer-actuated ride control that automatically picks either firm or soft ride settings in response to your driving style. In other words, with 0-60 times around five seconds flat, the XKR is pretty hairy-chested already. However, if you want a bit better cornering agility, you'll be pleased with the added grip of the 20-inch BBS modular wheels shod with even wider, lower rubber than stock (255/35ZR-20 front, 285/30ZR-20 rear, versus 245/45ZR-18 front, 255/45ZR-18 rear for the stock XKR).

The XKR 100 also gets special Brembo brakes with cross-drilled rotors for better cooling, and some minor-performance suspension tweaks as well.

The rest is cosmetic: anthracite-colored paint, Recaro leather seats (covered in Connolly hide leather--you won't get that if you just order them from Recaro, by the way) and aluminum cockpit trim.

We'd say that makes the upgraded XKR 100 a difficult purchase to justify on its own, since it isn't mechanically different enough than the stock XKR. But we'll render a more considered opinion in a few weeks, after a test drive. Meantime, anyone considering the XKR 100 must also drive the more practical and still lightening fast CLK 55 AMG Mercedes; the CL55 AMG, which is also a great joy to drive (as we mention elsewhere in this article); and the marvelous new Maserati Spyder.

BILLIONAIRES CAR

People who don't have billions of dollars tend to think lavishly about what they would do with that kind of money. Car writers especially get this question: "Why doesn't Bill Gates just spend $1 billion to have his very own car made for him?"

Well, we usually answer such questions very politely--or scurry off to the other end of the cocktail party as rapidly as possible--but the truth is, we think billionaires get to be that way by not squandering their dough.

Which is not to say that the super-rich can't blow $1 million on a rare collectible car or have their choice of the world's fastest, most lavish production automobiles. Many of them do. All such vehicles are easily within their means--the same way a 3 Series BMW is easily within reach of perhaps a million Americans. But just as you wouldn't go spending new-vacation-home money on a car--lest you want to find yourself divorced faster than your new speedster can hit 100 mph--Bill Gates has better, smarter things to do with his billions than developing his very own car.

We bring this up, and put it in this context, because we wanted to let you know about ten of the most expensive cars in the world. But before we do, we think it's important for you to have a little perspective on what it is buyers in this market can and will spend, and what, even to these lucky few, becomes outlandish or just a big annoyance. (Yes, an annoyance even if you have minions to do your car buying, since it can still be a big waste of time to have said minions, say, bring a car into the U.S. that hasn't been crash-tested by the feds.)

As a result, there are several cars that exotic sheet metal fanatics may notice "missing" from our list, and we explain this by saying that just because a very wealthy person could go through extreme legal hassles to get such monsters, they probably won't. Three examples are the $370,000 Pagani Zonda C12S (a 200-mph Italian racer built in Italy and powered by a Mercedes-Benz AMG V-12), the 2002 Spyker C8 Double 12 (a Dutch-built GT car with a 4.0 V-8 and a claimed 620 horsepower that has yet to be priced) and the Cerbera 4.5 made by English carmaker TVR, which is much faster than the current Corvette although it costs a bit more at roughly $70,000.

The problem is that none of those cars are coming to the U.S. anytime soon, at least according to official word from their makers. So putting them on our list is like hanging candy in the window but not offering it for sale.

This, then, is a list of ten of the most expensive cars you can buy in the U.S. right now. True, some are new models that are just becoming available, such as the Saleen S7, the Ferrari 575 M Maranello and the Lamborghini Murciélago, but even these only require that you contact the company or visit a dealer to make a deposit (and wait, at most, six months, for delivery).

One final qualification: We fudged a little. This isn't precisely a top ten list of the most expensive cars. That would basically be a bunch of Bentleys and Rolls-Royces and only a few other makes. So instead we picked the highest-dollar cars of each of ten carmakers, so no manufacturer got two slots. After all, even if you could afford a garage full of Rolls, you'd probably like to have a Ferrari or Lamborghini, too.

FCX HONDA

The FCX concept is Honda's latest take on fuel cells. Although its ultra-cab-forward body looks dramatically long, low, and wide, at 186 inches (15.5 feet) in overall length, the FCX is actually shorter than the Acura RL. It features a compact, Honda-developed fuel-cell stack in the middle of the car with two hydrogen tanks in the rear. The stack is actually much smaller than is now technologically feasible, but Honda says that it shows "our dream.

"The novel four-wheel-drive system has one front 80-kW electric motor with two in-wheel, 25-kw motors at the rear.

The deluxe cabin is outfitted with a mix of traditional Japanese materials--such as a wood floor--plus the latest gizmos. The dashboard rises up (toward the driver) as speed rises, supposedly to hold the driver's attention, which leads us to wonder if the steering wheel is right in front of your nose once you reach triple digits.

Interior Design

A microfiber material is added to the steering wheel, seats and shifter, providing the soft feel and luxurious appearance of suede without suede’s inherent drawbacks of difficult care and moisture sensitivity. As the smallest, lightest and most efficient Range Rover ever produced, the LRX is bound to grab the attention of those looking for a premium badge with a more attractive price-tag.

It’s likely the Range Rover LRX will share the same platform as the Land Rover Freelander but will also boast a selection of new engines with stop/start technology to slash carbon emissions and improve fuel economy.

Land Rover has said the project will cost £400million with £27million coming from the Government’s Grant for Business Investment scheme.

If the go-ahead is given, the Range Rover LRX will be built atLand Rover’s Halewood factory on Merseyside which employs 2,000 workers and also produces the Land Rover Freelander 2 and Jaguar X-Type.

Land Rover MD Phil Popham said: “The compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies of the LRX Concept showed how Land Rover is planning to respond to the needs of the changing world.

“Despite the current economic challenges, we remain committed to investing for the future and to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers.

Land Rover will make a final decision on whether to give the project a definite go-ahead later this year.

When the first details of the LRX were announced, Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern said: “It’s a Land Rover that would be comfortable on Bond Street or Fifth Avenue, but wouldn’t flinch at getting its wheels dirty.”

It made its debut at last year’s Detroit Motor Show and received a hugely positive reaction thanks to its dynamic design and green credentials.

Using a 2-litre diesel engine and hybrid powertrain, the LRX Concept would emit just 120g/km of carbon dioxide. It’s unsure what powertrains will be used if the Range Rover LRX is built.

New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV Coming To Moscow

Mitsubishi will introduce its latest Pajero Sport SUV next month at the annual Moscow International Auto Salon. The new Mitsu bruiser, known on the South side of the Americas as the Mitsubishi Montero, will feature 2- or 3-row seating along with water-repellent seats and a waterproof luggage compartment floor. They're features Mitsubishi claims to be "ideal for leisure use." We suppose that depends upon your idea of leisure. Tokyo July 17 2008 — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil its new Pajero Sport SUV model at the Moscow Auto Salon 2008 (The Moscow Motor Show) to be held at the Crocus Expo in Moscow between August 26 and September 7 (opens to the public on August 29). The new Pajero Sport will be phased in selected regions such as Russia, the ASEAN area, the Middle East, Latin America and Oceania starting in the fall this year. The model will carry a different name in different markets: Montero Sport in South America, Nativa in Latin America and Challenger in Australia. The new Pajero Sport will neither be sold in Central & Western Europe nor in North America, where other types of SUVs are favored.

The new Pajero Sport features dynamic and sporty exterior lines, complemented by a stylish and vast interior space that engenders a sense of comfort, purpose and safety. This cabin, available in either a 2-row (5-passenger) or 3-row (7-passenger) seating configuration is also very practical with water-repellent seats and a waterproof luggage compartment floor, ideal for leisure use.

Mitsubishi's latest SUV will be powered by a choice of three engines which all deliver outstanding motive performance and fuel economy: 2.5-liter and 3.2-liter common rail direct injection diesel units and a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline unit.

As per the Heffner website their Lambo twin turbo’s are making upwards of 800HP. After reviewing the video, traction looks like an issue, even with Lamborghini’s all wheel drive system in place. Mercedes Touts Its Role in 'Sex and the City' Movie - 20 March 2008

NEW YORK - Mercedes-Benz USA will likely spend a "few million dollars" advertising its product integration in New Line Cinema's upcoming big-screen version of the hit HBO series "Sex and the City," VP-Marketing Steve Canon told Advertising Age during the New York International Auto Show.

The movie's director, Michael Patrick King, will helm the Mercedes-Benz co-branded effort breaking on national U.S. TV, Mr. Canon said. The automaker's national creative agency of record, Merkley & Partners, New York, will work closely with New Line Cinema, one of the producers and the film's U.S. distributor, to develop the ads, he said.

The automaker is also studying whether to stage private screenings for owners and prospects or special ticket offers, Mr. Canon said.

The brand's German parent, Daimler AG, inked a global deal for product placement in the film, which opens in U.S. theaters May 30. But the moviemakers expanded the placement-only deal, telling Mercedes-Benz they wanted to do a scene in the movie at New York's Fashion Week, which the automaker sponsors. "We put the tents back up in New York City" for the re-creation of the fashion event, Mr. Canon said.

All four of the popular TV show's four female friends will appear in the film, which opens globally first in the U.K. and Belgium May 28, followed by Germany and Israel May 29. Actress Kim Cattrall, who again plays Samantha, appeared at a Mercedes-Benz press conference at the Detroit auto show early this year. Actor Chris Noth, who reprises his role as Mr. Big, is expected to be chauffeured in a Mercedes S Class in the film. The GLK SUV is due in another scene.

"Not every movie calls for this type of promotion" from Mercedes-Benz, Mr. Canon said. But he expects "Sex and the City: The Movie" to skew highly female, which he said is a great audience for his brand.

By comparison, Mercedes-Benz USA promoted its late 2007 partnership with Walt Disney Pictures' "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" with online gaming and no TV spots. Mercedes had a redone 2008 model C350 sport sedan and GL SUV in the movie.

Separately, Mr. Canon said the automaker has expanded its fleet of vehicles in Hollywood from 45 to 60 because it had to turn down too many movie opportunities.
